When Fort Assiniboine was shut down in the early 1900s, both the Rocky Boy Reservation and Beaver Creek Park were formed.  Rocky Boy is in the Mountains; it is home to both Chippewas and Metis.  The park runs along the northern slop of the Bear Paws.  It is a beautiful place just south of Havre, Montana.  When I lived in Hays, Montana, I saw the sun set every evening behind the Bear Paws.  Almost all the rain and snowstorms came to Hays from the direction of the Bear Paws.  The Bear Paw Mountains were a part of my daily life for those two years.    It is a very special experience to hike and explore this beautiful range.
