La Jolla 2020
Nancy and I made another trip to La Jolla to visit her father. It was an opportunity for me to spend four solid days on the beach from before sunrise until after sunset. We stayed in a hotel located across from the beach towards the middle of about a one mile stretch that includes the most incredible beauty. The beach and tidal pools, the ocean and the wildlife is spectacular. It is clear from the numbers of seals, seal lions and birds that there is an abundance of fish below the surface. The other telltale signs are the overwhelming smell and the artistically deposited guano. As opposed to my first trip to La Jolla in 2019, I had use of my tripod. That was a fantastic addition, and you can see the results from the softening of the ocean and waves in my sunrise and sunset images. The softening is enhanced when shooting against rocks and cliffs and the La Jolla beach is a solid shore of these formations. I also did some experimentation with a neutral density filter. This filter screws on to the front of the camera lens and reduces the amount of light that comes into the camera without changing the color of the light. Using the filter allowed me to shoot long exposures for a longer period of time after the sunrise and before the sunset. During these periods, there is ordinarily too much light to do so, even when the aperture is closed down as much as possible. Regardless of whether I was shooting the seascapes or the beach and tidal pools or the wildlife, the abstracts were everywhere. Getting this much uninterrupted time to play with my camera in such a spectacularly beautiful place is a gift. As Nancy's father has returned to Ohio, this might have been our last visit to this part of the country. There are just too many other great places to visit and, unfortunately, I don't have forever. I'm glad I have all of these images to remind me of this awesome experience.
