OBX 2013 2017

Pauline and I have had the great fortune to make regular visits to Corolla.  It is such a beautiful and interesting place to shoot, from the beach on the Atlantic side, to Whalehead on the western side of the islands, to northern Corolla beach, where the wild horses roam free up to Virginia. When in Corolla, I always make a point of getting to Kitty Hawk Pier to shoot long exposures of the ocean and sunrises. Jockey Ridge State Park is also a great place to shoot. It features the tallest sand dune east of the Mississippi. If you love to shoot patterns, textures and abstracts, the dunes offer lots of great opportunity. The last time I was at Jockey Ridge was a few days after the Outer Banks was hit by a hurricane. As a result, a good portion of the low-lying areas of the dunes were flooded. Within days of the flooding, these newly formed freshwater ponds ‘developed’ aquatic plant and animal life. It was remarkable. It is difficult or impossible to get a person in a wheelchair down onto the beach. Regular wheelchairs don’t roll through sand.  At Corolla, after October, you are permitted to drive on the beach.  Pauline loved the beach.  It was great being able to drive Pauline to her spot on the beach.
