Outer Banks 2021

I am familiar with the northern portion of the Outer Banks in North Carolina because Pauline and I would vacation in that area as often as we were able. Pauline loved the beach and ocean and we would go during her vacations from teaching. Nancy had never been to the Outer Banks, and I wanted to share it with her. We scheduled a week vacation in November and were able to rent a home right on the beach in Corolla. We were able to afford it because it was off season and as it was still during the pandemic, many stores and restaurants were closed and there weren't a lot of tourists. It was a wonderful trip. We spent time at the Kitty Hawk Pier, the Currituck Banks Coastal Estuarine Reserve, the Dunes at Jockey's Ridge State Park and Whalehead. As our house was in Corolla, we spent the vast majority of our time on Corolla Beach. I don't often get the opportunity to be out with my camera for extended periods of time. When I can, it is a gift. I was out with my camera on the beach for an entire morning from before sunrise throughout the week. Each day was very different and spectacularly beautiful. As a photographer, you learn that a perfectly clear sky might be pretty, but it sure isn't very interesting for photography. Clouds make for the most interesting light and color. Nature gave me just about everything during our week. As I love abstracts, this is the perfect environment. I was on the beach long enough to watch the wind and waves actually form the most wonderful abstracts in the sand. The combination of reflections from the water and the patterns and textures carved in the sand created the most interesting and beautiful abstracts. The dunes at Jockey's Ridge State Park also offers some great abstracts. These are the largest dunes east of the Mississippi River and just adjacent to the area where the Wright Brothers made their first flight. It is very easy to become enthralled with the overwhelmingly large landscapes. But if you look closely down at your feet, the abstracts are everywhere.
